[ i hate to say yuri won't tell him to stop. but also don't make me explain fire emblem's magic system i physically can't. ]
So you have to learn it and also have the right conditions to use it in? You couldn't just summon fire in the middle of a battle, you'd need kindling and a spark before you could actually create the fire in the first place?
[ that's... literally the space of time it would take for an enemy to gut you. ] It's just... something you learn and can instinctively use where I'm from. Limitations are your own, what your skills trend towards, and how much magic you can use before it drains you, and that's about it.
Well, you only need kindling, because you're making the spark yourself. But it takes a lot of training to make that spark.
And I suspect that's the difference between your world and mine: we don't use fire on a battlefield like that. We use swords and guns and cavalry and cannons. Any sfeer theory- that's the, er, 'sort of like magic' that I am talking about- is done in a lab not in a battle.
...I suppose it could be used in guerrilla warfare tactics, but that's because the strategy gives you time to get ready first. Besides, launching a fireball at someone isn't nearly as effective as igniting a molotov cocktail and throwing it.
We do have sword fights. And cavalries, sort of. House mounted units, at the very least. But.... uh... guns? Cannons? [ that's a no. ]
... Imagine magic being confined to a lab only. What are you doing with all that research once you've done it? We have crest scholars and people who study magic, but it gets put into practical application at the end of the day. Not just... kept in the walls of a school.
It has its practical uses too. Starting fires in the cold of winter is much easier, for once. As is maintaining cooking temperature. Likewise, controlling the wind means controlling which direction a boat can travel, and controlling the flow of water means it's easier to water crops and assist with dispensing drinking water.
It's just better suited for mundane reasons, rather than for combat.
You just learn how to do it. Anyone can learn the most basic spells, but there's no guarantee that you'll be able to master it or learn more powerful magic without some sort of talent in it.
Some magic is strong against other types. Hope you've got the stronger type, and maybe also train yourself up so you can take a few hits before hitting the deck.
See, that's where our worlds are different. No one magic- or science I suppose for my world- is inherently stronger or weaker. It all depends on the user's willpower and the area they have influence over. A sufficiently trained user of sfeer theory could even overpower someone else's reactions and take control of it for themselves.
You don't have elements that have a sort of... power over others?
It's not too dissimilar in some ways. I'm not a full mage, so I wouldn't expect to be able to best a mage in a battle. I could hold my own, sure, but in terms of put magical strength they're going to be step above me. But I also have a sword, and they don't.
Not really. You can put out fire with with water I suppose, but the other person could force the water away from the fire if your will is stronger.
My specialty is in 'control'. I don't have a very large sfeer- er, that's the range in which you can create and control reactions. Mine only extends out about three meters from me, whereas most people can affect a much larger area. But within that area right around me, I have near absolute control. Taking over someone else's reactions is far easier than starting one, so that is what I typically do.

I don't think you'd find people who haven't had training of some description using magic.

[He smiles a bit sheepishly.]
It's only really useful defensively, though.

So, if someone was reaching in to punch you, you could force the trajectory of their punch to change? That sort of thing?
