I want to say 'anyone can do it, with training', but the truth is that you need to be particularly observant of others and the strength of their willpower to counteract their actions.
[But that's not the whole story, and Luca knows that sidestepping the truth is technically lying. And he doesn't want to lie to Yuri, not about something as fundamental to his life as this.
His voice does turn a touch more melancholy as he continues, though. This is a sore spot for him, but he still wants to try admitting to it.]
Most who study sfeer theory have a much wider sfeer than I do- it's usually measured in meters, not centimeters like it is for me- and thus are free to do much more with their talents. I had to get very good at one specific branch of study because my options are severely limited.
[ he almost goes to say that it doesn't seem like luca is lacking in the willpower or observational skills for this sort of thing, but the change to his tone of voice makes him pause. while he's talking, yuri will also extend that olive branch by trying to get luca's hair back under something like control while he's talking. ]
...
You make do with what you have. A lot of people just give up if things aren't easy, or they're not on the same level as other people with things.
[ he knows a thing or two about dragging himself by his fingertips to get what he wants -- or what he needs. it might not the same, but the principle of it isn't unfamiliar. ]
Wouldn't it be more impressive to specialise in something when the cards are stacked against you regardless?
[Aaaaand there's those butterflies all over again.
Luca never expected anyone to understand. Logically he should have known that he would eventually meet someone who could understand his problems with sfeer theory and his choices that resulted from those problems, but years of keeping those problems to himself have left him thinking nobody could understand.
But then again, he should have expected it. After all, Yuri seems to know a thing or two about having to fight for one's own place in the world.]
You know, I couldn't agree more.
[On both accounts. Luca would never give up his life's passion just because it's hard, and he wants to think that even his efforts could be seen as impressive. Someone else had said that before too, hadn't they?]
...it's nothing spectacular, but it's innovative.
[Maybe if he talks about the science here, he can try to calm his heart down a bit.]
More satisfying when you achieve what you need to achieve too.
[ all the clawing, the climbing, and the determination coming to a peak and then you reach your goal. or... one of them. his goals are small stepping stones, bit by bit, piece by piece in a mission that will last long after he's dead and gone and be carried by the people who share his dream that still live on.
building foundations for the future. ]
It's adaptive. That's a natural thing, I think. People who don't adapt tend to do terribly.
[It's an eternal struggle that will truly last for generations. But Luca is finding that he might not mind the struggle, given the right company.
Luca goes to stand up, intending on offering a hand to Yuri to stand up too. But once he is out of the water, he quickly finds that the swimsuit clings uncomfortably to him.]
...
[He glances down at himself.]
This particular thing might take time to adapt to.
[ he looks up at the cliff. and then back down at luca with a raised eyebrow. ]
Explain the romance behind walking along a beach.
[ but he is moving out of the water, and back onto the sand. he's looking at the different shells sticking out of the sand, and the lap of the waves against the shore. ]
But jumping into the water... I can see the thrill of that.
[ he just sort of blinks at the hand. it's not like he doesn't know what holding hands on a walk is, literally, but well. he's never done it before. but after a moment, he'll take luca's hand. ]
[Time for Yuri to experience it! Because he'll lace his fingers with Yuri's and let their arms hang between them as they start to walk down the beach. They're close enough to the water that the waves sometimes cover their feet too, but it doesn't impede walking.]
You know, truth be told, I've never done this either.
[ what is this thing you call handholding? it's. something? it's something. he isn't really sure what he's meant to do with it, now his hand is... essentially luca's captive. ]
Given what you've told me, that doesn't surprise me. Would you have felt comfortable doing this back home?
[It certainly is something! And Luca is hoping that Yuri can't feel how quick his pulse is through their connected hands. He's already trying not to die of a heart attack here.]
Not really. Time spent between two men is limited to bars and bedrooms. It's assumed that if you want the company of a man, then it's about sex. After all, if you're looking for friendship or companionship, then you don't need a romantic partner for that. And if you want a romantic partner but no sex, you can just find a woman you get along with.
I never even thought to question it.
[Not until he came here and learned that being with a man isn't only about sex.]
[ he can’t die two days ahead of schedule, sorry to say. luca will survive.
People don’t question what’s considered to be normal. If they do question it, they’ll do it in private. And if they don’t and try to bring about change? Then they’ll be considered radical.
Not that it’s always a bad thing, changing the things that don’t work.
It sounds like you’ve already had a long think about all of this.
