[When Yuri does it this time, Luca holds up a hand. There is some resistance to Yuri's wind gust, and Luca's face screws up in concentration as he tries to feel out the magic and sense the differences between it and his own magic. He doesn't completely negate the wind, but it does grow weaker after a couple seconds.]
he'll cast the wind spell one more time, watching luca's hand like he's trying to see exactly what it is he's doing. he can see the result of it -- the weaker flow of wind, but the how? that's not so clear. ]
[This time the gesture varies slightly, and the wind blows right past him. The water ripples from the wind, and it keeps going in the direction Yuri fired it. But nothing on Luca's person- his hair, any water on him, or even a physical reaction to the wind- is affected by it at all.
Huh. Impressive, was that just from watching the magic itself?
[ making it... ignore him? almost? or move around him. something like that would be helpful to know if dealing with mages on the battlefield, that's for sure.
but given that luca looks a little smug over here he just... pinches his nose between his fingers. ]
[Luca is going to RUB AT HIS NOSE first, how dare.
But after a few moments he will start to grumble out an explanation.]
What you saw was my sfeer. My particular specialty is in counteracting other people's reactions. You made a gust of wind, so I stopped it from affecting me. It's a matter of matching the force and willpower you put into your magic exactly to negate it.
I want to say 'anyone can do it, with training', but the truth is that you need to be particularly observant of others and the strength of their willpower to counteract their actions.
[But that's not the whole story, and Luca knows that sidestepping the truth is technically lying. And he doesn't want to lie to Yuri, not about something as fundamental to his life as this.
His voice does turn a touch more melancholy as he continues, though. This is a sore spot for him, but he still wants to try admitting to it.]
Most who study sfeer theory have a much wider sfeer than I do- it's usually measured in meters, not centimeters like it is for me- and thus are free to do much more with their talents. I had to get very good at one specific branch of study because my options are severely limited.
[ he almost goes to say that it doesn't seem like luca is lacking in the willpower or observational skills for this sort of thing, but the change to his tone of voice makes him pause. while he's talking, yuri will also extend that olive branch by trying to get luca's hair back under something like control while he's talking. ]
...
You make do with what you have. A lot of people just give up if things aren't easy, or they're not on the same level as other people with things.
[ he knows a thing or two about dragging himself by his fingertips to get what he wants -- or what he needs. it might not the same, but the principle of it isn't unfamiliar. ]
Wouldn't it be more impressive to specialise in something when the cards are stacked against you regardless?
[Aaaaand there's those butterflies all over again.
Luca never expected anyone to understand. Logically he should have known that he would eventually meet someone who could understand his problems with sfeer theory and his choices that resulted from those problems, but years of keeping those problems to himself have left him thinking nobody could understand.
But then again, he should have expected it. After all, Yuri seems to know a thing or two about having to fight for one's own place in the world.]
You know, I couldn't agree more.
[On both accounts. Luca would never give up his life's passion just because it's hard, and he wants to think that even his efforts could be seen as impressive. Someone else had said that before too, hadn't they?]
...it's nothing spectacular, but it's innovative.
[Maybe if he talks about the science here, he can try to calm his heart down a bit.]
More satisfying when you achieve what you need to achieve too.
[ all the clawing, the climbing, and the determination coming to a peak and then you reach your goal. or... one of them. his goals are small stepping stones, bit by bit, piece by piece in a mission that will last long after he's dead and gone and be carried by the people who share his dream that still live on.
building foundations for the future. ]
It's adaptive. That's a natural thing, I think. People who don't adapt tend to do terribly.
[It's an eternal struggle that will truly last for generations. But Luca is finding that he might not mind the struggle, given the right company.
Luca goes to stand up, intending on offering a hand to Yuri to stand up too. But once he is out of the water, he quickly finds that the swimsuit clings uncomfortably to him.]
...
[He glances down at himself.]
This particular thing might take time to adapt to.

I made it so sfeer theory would work.
[But it's basically magic as studied like a science, so yeah.]
Show me again.
